Employees are eligible to receive the following equipment benefits — if something doesn’t fit the role, or if you need something to do your job well, we’re flexible and can make adjustments.
<aside> ☝️ Although this can probably be assumed, it never hurts to confirm things like this: contractors need to provide their own equipment. There may be exceptions to this, but that’s the standard. If you’re ever unsure if you can get equipment or not, please talk to your manager or company contact.

New employees will be given a laptop when they start.
We prefer laptops because they’re easier to move around and bring with you. When we go on our Company Retreats, we usually ask people to bring their laptops with them.
That said, the team leads know best what is necessary for each role, and will make a decision on what to buy for each employee.
Current standard issue is a new Macbook Air for most roles, or Macbook Pro for colleagues that need the extra power.
We generally consider purchasing a new laptop for employees every three years.
Just because three years have gone by, doesn’t necessarily mean you’re automatically due for a new laptop. We want to replace laptops only when they need to be replaced.
US Employees should work with their manager to get a laptop purchased and sent to them. International Employees may be asked to purchase a laptop and request a reimbursement. It’s a large purchase, so we can expedite reimbursement or try to pre-reimburse these expenses if needed by the individual.
Laptop information is stored in the Tofugu Computer Hardware database (private) to keep track of things like the equipment’s location, age, and when it’s due for replacement.
New employees will have the option to get a new monitor when they start.
Unless deemed unnecessary for work, Tofugu will pay or reimburse up to $500 for a new monitor.
We generally consider purchasing a new monitor for employees every four or five+ years.

Employees may use up to $300/year on miscellaneous tech accessories that they need. That includes things like keyboards, mice, cables, laptop stands, headphones, etc. You may also use the accessories allowance to buy a new Kindle / other reading device, when your first one gets too old, or conks out.
If you’re not sure if something is eligible beyond those things, please speak with your manager.
